Door Knocking: Knock It Off!

There are a lot of real estate “gurus”, trainers, coaches, and agents that are still preaching the effectiveness of door knocking. It’s not uncommon to hear them say if you need some business to go knock some doors. Or you’ll see the videos of agents talking about how much money they made from knocking doors.

My response to that… Let them have it! If they want to spend hours of their day to annoy a few people, let them have it.

We live in a time where technology allows us the potential to reach millions of people at any given moment. Now of course we aren’t going to reach millions of people each time we post something online but the potential is there and we can relatively easily reach thousands of people.

So you can spend a few hours walking around, knocking on doors, and annoying home owners while providing no real value to them. Or you could spend a fraction of that time making a video for social media that provides value to thousands of people.

Let them have the door knocking. Your time is valuable, use it wisely.

YouTube is the world’s second largest search engine and it’s owned by Google. So what does that mean for you? Find things people are searching Google for that relate to your city. Then make a video answering the question and post it to YouTube. Your video has a chance to show up in both the results on Google or on YouTube.

Let’s say your city is Dallas, Tx. You could start with general ideas like “best restaurants in Dallas”, then start narrowing it down, “5 best Italian restaurants in Dallas”, then narrow further, “best Italian restaurants near _____ neighborhood in Dallas”. Restaurants is just an example but you can do the same with shopping, outdoor activities, family activities, etc.

All these things are providing value to the viewer.

To make videos that relate more to real estate, you could do a series like, “5 Amazing Homes That Are Currently For Sale For Less Than $xxx,xxx in Dallas.”

Be creative, the potential with technology is unlimited. You’ll do a whole lot more for your business by positioning yourself as the local expert that makes all these videos than you will by being known as that annoying realtor that goes around knocking on people’s doors.
